Blowfish Malibu Spotlight: Jannie Denney

Get to know one of our brilliant Designers at Blowfish Malibu, Jannie Denney.

Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, Jannie! We’re excited to learn more about your role at Blowfish Malibu, what inspires you, and what excites you about the future with the brand.

Tell us about your role at Blowfish Malibu:

Officially, I am the Design Director & Senior Designer of Active Lifestyle Footwear. Unofficially, if you ask my fellow designer Chip Bronsky, I am the Madhatter at Blowfish. What does a design director do you ask? Well, that means I make the sneaker collection come to life.

Simply put, the narrative is as follows: contemplation+conception+ creative brainstorming, design, development and then sales. I like to relate it to the likeness of a badass chef (in this case, I’m a badass sneakerhead/designer) in the sense that I come up with the theme of the meal, set out to source and create the ingredients. I mix it all up and put out an extraordinary plate to sell and hope the people love it and come back for more.

When did you first become interested in designing?

I am really the definition of a sneakerhead. From ages 5-16, I grew up overseas as an American in Saudi Arabia with an obsession of what defined a “real” American, and one of the defining things to me was “American fashion.” Especially sneakers.  I am also an artist by nature, so I would always reimagine, sketch-up, and design things I would love to wear. To go into the field of a designer, and even narrowing that to the field to sneaker designs, is a dream come true. If you know me from this industry, you know that I have been designing sneakers for a while. So, when I approached Blowfish in 2016 and told them they needed a sneaker assortment, they agreed and welcomed me with open arms. It’s been a frenzied fashion rollercoaster ride since then!

What did you do previously before joining the Blowfish Malibu team?

Oh, my
. just about everything and anything. My career follies are one for the books! I started my career in fashion, so I did everything from working as a stylist for MTV videos to designing for Forever 21 to being a graphic designer and – perhaps most importantly – waited tables! Everyone in the world should have to wait tables!  Whenever someone asks me how I became a good public speaker I tell them, “waiting tables, my friend.” You get a really well-rounded life education on some of the best career skills needed to be successful in this world such as public speaking, selling, multitasking, “reading a room” and learning to put a smile on when you feel like tongue lashing someone.

With that being said, I started sketching for Candies & Esprit kids back in 1998-2000. From there I moved on to BBC International in Boca Raton and left in 2004 with brands such as Marvel, Everlast, Steve Madden, and Director of Airwalk under my belt. The next step was flying back home to LA in 2004 to work for Rocketdog as a Senior Designer with Stephen Hoyt as my creative director to help start their sneaker program. When Stephen left to start Blowfish in 2006, I became creative director and lead designer for Rocketdog until 2009, which was to become one of the milestones in my footwear career. I then moved to Zigi to become their marketing director and created the brand Rock & Candy for them. Again, another challenging and exciting milestone in my career path.

I took my passion for eco-friendly & sustainable projects to a new level in 2012 when I started my own lifestyle brand Tigerbear Republik, a brand that had a mission to F.I.G.H.T.= Feed, Inspire, Give, Help & Teach. The products would help the world without hurting it.  The brand was voted by Whoopi Goldberg on The View to be in the top 5 best brands to give as a gift in 2015. It was a surreal dream when I got to see both Hugh Jackman and Whoopi rocking my shoes on the show! After giving birth to my daughter Ara in 2015, I decided to take a step back from running around the world for my own brand and decided to just do it for Blowfish Malibu in 2016, partnering with my former creative director and one of my mentors, Stephen Hoyt.

It has been a challenging and thoroughly rewarding journey doing what I do best – SNEAKERS!

What projects at the brand have you been working on that you’re excited about?

The 4Earth program is a program I am immensely proud of.  For those who know me, know I like a challenge and this has been quite the beast to wrestle. Since the start of my research into sustainable living and footwear in 2008, I see how much sustainable advancement there has been in the world of footwear. Not only do we as designers get to partake in designing & developing footwear that would provide awareness and an example of how to be sustainable, but we would also in turn help contribute to Oceana, the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation in the world. Win-Win situation, wouldn’t you say?

What do you like most about working in the fashion industry?

Honestly, I love to travel the world, and working in fashion allows me this privilege. I love immersing myself into different cultures, foods, smells, history, art
literally everything.  Covid-19 has taught us endless lessons and one lesson it taught me was to never take my traveling for granted. It is a gift, a pleasure, and a luxury that many cannot afford. I am quite blessed and grateful that it is wrapped in the nuances of my job.

In one day, I climbed the rustic cobblestones of Istanbul in search of the greatest colors and drank Turkish tea while snacking on Turkish delight. I sketched on the saffron-scented corners of the grand bazaar and reviewed the collection with the design team while lounging on gorgeous Turkish pillows, taking in the scents of roasted meats. Was that a made-up fantastic story? Nope, that’s me and that is why I love my job in the fashion industry.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

All of the above, and working with Chip Bronsky. That guy is the best design partner ever! Besides being quite talented, he deals with my crazy and always keeps me laughing, even in the worst of times. Cheers Chip!

The Blowfish Malibu offices are in LA. What’s your favorite thing about the city?

I’m a true & true LA Girl. Yes, I grew up overseas but I spent every summer vacation in LA to stay with my father’s side of the family. They are 2nd generation Mexican-Americans.

My favorite part of LA is that the city is always alive. There is always something to do and somewhere to go. Do you want to go play dodgeball dressed as a princess? Guess what, there’s a group doing just that. You want to eat a pancake that is wrapped in rice noodles and deep-fried then topped with maple glazed veggies and bacon? Well, I know the name of the restaurant. Where else can you watch an outdoor movie while sitting next to Charlie Chaplin’s & Marilyn Monroe’s grave?

LA is full of the greatest pleasures, adventures, novelties, and mysteries. I love LA.

Which is your favorite pair of Blowfish Malibu shoes?

Ok, so I am biased because I love all of the sneakers I design. Some sneakers may be prettier than others, but I love them all the same. So I like to spend valuable time with each and every one of them.

At this moment, the PLAY in Rainbow Tie-dye & the MARLEY in Latte Spots have been stealing all my attention
 those spoiled kids.

What advice would you have for someone who’s trying to pursue the same career as you?

The advice I would give is the same I would give to my children when asked the question, “what should I do as a career?”

I would say do what you love. When you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. When I started in shoe design, I really just started playing. Being a designer is more of a mental battle than anything. You have to keep innovating & challenging yourself to be better, work smarter and be somewhat of a foreseer. To see the future of fashion because that is where we live and breathe.

Have confidence in yourself and the work you put forth, because when you falter in your confidence, then your team does too. So, don’t let that happen!

So, if you love to design, love fashion, and love challenges this is the field for you. Do not give up on your dreams, ever, even when your path seems a bit discouraging. You have one life to live – there is no repeat or rewind button – so go out there and live your best life.

JUST FOR FUN

What was the last thing you were obsessed with?

Metaphysical teachings.

Where are you from and how has that shaped you?

Oh, this is a long story, so I’ll make it short. I’m a third culture kid. Being an American growing up with a Mexican-American father and a tough-as-nails Thai mother in Saudi Arabia was definitely life-defining. So, my formative school defining years was going to an international school in the desert in the richest country in the world. How has that shaped me? Well, I’m crazy as a bat and that’s how I like it. I think my crazy mixed up life experiences has made me more compassionate and considerate to everyone. It’s also allowed me to bring all that crazy creative energy to my art which has made me quite successful. So a little dose of crazy seems to be the key to success these days! I can also make a mean Thai Curry Burrito.

What’s your dream travel destination?

It’s a battle between Egypt & Iceland.

If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Anthony Bourdain.

When do you feel best about yourself?

When I’m with my 3 children.

What’s your personal motto?

Live your life as if you are the superhero in your own movie. Dream big and live bigger and greater than you have ever imagined. Because limitations that are put upon you in life is only an illusion.

What’s a fun fact about you most people don’t know?

When I have a little vodka in my system, I like to pretend I’m in the WWW. My wrestling name is the Thai Tiger.

BLOWFISH MALIBU SPOTLIGHT: AARON WARE

Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, Aaron! We’re excited to learn more about your role at Blowfish Malibu, what inspires you, and what excites you about the future with the brand.

Read on to learn more about Aaron:

Tell us about your role at Blowfish Malibu.

I work in Sales and Customer Service. I work alongside sales rep Henry Colominas, who is responsible for the southeast region of the United States. I am responsible for placing orders and making sure orders are shipped in a timely manner.  In addition to working with Henry, I take phone calls from customers. Customers will call in regards to placing an order and asking for line sheets with product information.  Consumers will call in regards to stores in their area that carry our brand, and they often ask me what styles do I recommend.  The most interesting part of working in Sales/Customer Service is seeing the different trends and styles for each region. Customers that live in the northern region of the US typically call for boots, whereas consumers in the southern region are all about sneakers and sandals.

What did you do previously before joining the Blowfish Malibu team?

I previously worked at K-Swiss, in the same role.

How did you get started with Blowfish Malibu?

I got started with Blowfish Malibu by a recommendation from my good friend Allie Woerner, who is a member of the Marketing team.  She thought I would be a perfect fit for the Blowfish family.

What I like most about working in the fashion industry is seeing the different trends in each region of the country.  Also, women are very unique and versatile when it comes to putting an outfit together.

Working the Atlanta Market Show in Atlanta, GA. I really enjoy this show because it allows me to meet our customers in person, and put a name-to-face. The show also puts in perspective how successful we have been as a brand for the past 4-5 years.  Our booth at the show is consistently filled with people trying to place orders, and new customers wanting Blowfish product in their boutiques.

The Blowfish Malibu offices are in LA. What’s your favorite thing about the city?

My two favorite things about LA are the beautiful weather and the different types of restaurants.  How can you hate living in a city where the average temperature is 72 degrees? The great weather allows us to enjoy outdoor activities with friends and family. I’m biased, but I believe that LA is the food capital of America. If you wanted, you could eat at a different type of restaurant for 365 days.

Which is your favorite pair of Blowfish Malibu shoes?

The Play sneaker in Red Buffalo Check. It’s a sneaker that you can wear year-round.

What advice would you have for someone who’s trying to pursue the same career as you?

My advice would be to make sure you are passionate about your career.  At the end of the day, your happiness should be the most important.

Discover LA: Venice Beach Boardwalk

For this week’s Discover LA Series, we visit the legendary Venice Beach Boardwalk.

The world famous Venice Beach Boardwalk is on most people’s to-do list when visiting Los Angeles. The boardwalk, which spans one and a half miles on the Southern California coast, is the second most visited destination is Southern California, according to Touropia.com. (Disneyland is the first.) And for a good reason! With such a wide variety of activities to do and people to watch, you can easily spend an entire day just cruising the ‘walk. Street performers, shops, and food stalls all cry out for your attention, while the skate park and legendary Muscle Beach beckon you as well. Pack a camera, because Venice Beach Boardwalk has it all.

But if you are wondering where to start or what to do, no problem! I listed out my five favorite things to do on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. Check it out below.

Rent a Bike

In my opinion, the best way to experience the boardwalk is by cruising down the beachfront bike path. The bike path is about 1.5 miles long with countless bicycle rental shops along the way. The path winds along the sun-soaked sand and leads to Santa Monica. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to the Santa Monica Boardwalk from Venice Beach, so venturing north to ride the ferris wheel is totally doable. Find a list of bike rentals HERE!

People Watch

My favorite activity of them all – people watching! Observing both the locals and tourists that visit Venice is quite entertaining. Once you get to Venice, you will see that it is filled with all kinds of people and personalities. Along the path, there will also be many street performers, so catch a show or two. Check out the performers eating fire, singing, break dancing, juggling, playing instruments and more. Usually, bigger shows happen during the weekend when the performers attract larger audiences.

Explore the Art

Venice Beach is a creative place, to say the least. You will find yourself amongst art walls, street displays, and artists selling their work on the boardwalk. Take the time to stop and appreciate the work of local artists! Maybe you’ll head home with a unique piece of your own. There is something for everyone here, with art ranging from watercolor and photography to graffiti art and balloon animals.

Go Shopping

If you are looking for LA souvenirs, the boardwalk is the place to go! There are more than enough souvenir shops to find something for everyone on your list.

Check out the Skate Park

What’s a trip to Venice Beach Boardwalk without checking out the skate park? Watch skaters of all ages and experience levels hit the ramps at the famous Venice Beach Skate Park. This area is so popular that it even became a level in a Tony Hawk Pro Skater game. I love to take a break from shopping and perusing to watch the skaters do their tricks. On any given day, you can usually catch some really talented skaters!

And don’t forget to take a picture under the “Venice” sign on Windward Avenue and Pacific Avenue. (Like the photo featured at the beginning of this article.)

We’d love to see you and your favorite Blowfish Malibu shoes on the Venice Beach Boardwalk! Make sure to tag us for a chance to be featured @blowfishmalibu.

Blowfish Malibu Style We Can’t Get Enough Of!

New year, fresh looks. Inspiring style brought to you by some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes.

The majority of us use a new year to reflect on the past. Some people may choose to create resolutions and set goals, while others may use this time to simply be inspired.  A new year presents us a clean slate and in turn gives us hope for the future. Out with the old, in with the new, right? These newly set intentions and thoughts weave through various parts of our lives;  from health and wellness, to financial resolutions, travel goals, and style. Because we are fashion-obsessed (duh), this week we’re looking for inspiring, new ways to update our wardrobe for the new year. With every new season, we rely on some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes who rock their looks (and their Blowfish Malibu kicks) to encourage fun change.

This means we’re headed to IG to hunt down fresh looks to inspire and revamp our style.

Find inspiration below!

Love Island’s adorable @lauraloucrane is rocking her Ralo boot, available at Office Shoes in Europe. We love how she paired these boots with a leather jacket and vintage tee.

@theangelajones lovessss her Mondo sneakers and wears them while running around Los Angeles any chance she gets. We are totally feeling the camo jacket paired with denim cut-offs. Plus, that high ponytail is killing it.

We don’t think we’ll ever get over the Bungalow sandal (a year-round favorite, if you ask us!), and @lularoeashelymickelson is rocking hers like summer never ended! PS. how amazing is that floral duster!?

@ashleerosehartley is one of the cutest girls on the ‘gram. It’s no surprise we can’t get over how well she styled one of our classic styles: Balla.

We’ve got a massive crush on @jeskenyon and can’t get over how well she styled our beloved Play sneaker. Can we get this outfit for ourselves, ASAP? LOVE the long sweater and sneaker combo.

Comfort + casual + effortless + modern = the perfect look. We love how @jasinez paired her adorable grey slip-on’s with cute denim trousers and an on-trend mustard sweater!

@theclumsytraveler is a great friend to the brand, and she effortlessly rocks our favorite shoes throughout the year. Check her out on the Santa Monica pier in a pair of on-trend neutral booties! They look perfect with her cuffed boyfriend jeans and casual, yet feminine, white tee.

@vanessa_la_blanche is making us feel “50 shades of jealous” with this fresh, winter-approved ensemble. We need grey booties ASAP.

We don’t know what we love more: @jeskenyon in her comfy Play sneakers this season or that yummy latte she’s drinking!

Feeling inspired? Which looks would you rock this year?

Meet some of our Blowfish Boos

Halloween is here(!) so we’re highlighting some of our favorite Blowfish boos.

Okay, we admit it. We’re a little shooketh that it’s actually Halloween, considering we were JUST dancing at Coachella, right? That being said, as sad as we are that summer is over, we’re pretty obsessed with the Fall styles we’re seeing. Furthermore, we’re extra obsessed with how some of our favorite Instagram boos are styling their Blowfish Malibu kicks.

Check them out below!

Angela Jones – one of our favorite LA gals – is rocking the hell out of her Storz bootie. She seriously makes us want these in every single color.

Ashlee Rose Hartley fully embraced fall in both her outfit and the scenery! Can we be transported there right now, please? Her bootie is San Fran and completely convinces us that Leopard is indeed a neutral these days.

My Wee Buddy is SERIOUSLY rocking the Stood Up bootie in Whiskey. How would you wear these bad boys this fall?

Stephanie Wolfe is rocking Kalvin, a red faux-leather sneaker that you’ll never want to take off this season.

The Clumsy Traveler proves that a good sneaker is an excellent choice year-round by wearing PLAY, one our favorite pair of kicks. No joke, we wear these every day.

Erin Rose Official rocked Campfire, a Buckle exclusive, during her epic road trip through the states this Fall. How perfect are these cuties!?

Joining Erin on the road was Mallory on the Moon, who rocked our favorite bootie of the fall, PAULO, also available exclusive.

Zazusworld may be the cutest thing we’ve ever seen in Sanborn, available for our European friends at Office.

Do you have a favorite pair of Blowfish Malibu shoes that you’ve been wearing non-stop? We’d love to see how you rock them, so tag us on Instagram! And who knows, maybe you’ll be featured in the next highlight reel of our favorite gals!

Sail Away With Us – A Summer SoirĂ©e

Blowfish Malibu and Friends set sail on Friday, August 17th, on our first ever Summer Boat Party.

Our marketing team spent a month flushing out the plan for our summer soirée. From scouting the location, to penning the guest list, to the food that would be served. Plus we wanted to create epic goodie bags to give the girls to take home with them. Everything needed to be accounted for. Everything needed to be perfect.

Originally, we planned on hosting our summer bash at a local restaurant in Malibu. But our President Don Weiss came to the rescue and volunteered to host the event on his sailboat in Marina Del Rey. (Check out our last party on the boat HERE!) Obviously, this was the ideal way to host both a party AND give our guests an unforgettable experience!

So what was the plan, you ask? We invited a group of our favorite LA girls on board for lunch and rosé as we sailed up the coast to Malibu. For food, we went with our all-time favorite, Bay Cities Deli, offering everyone on board a selection of sandwiches and salads. (Our team cannot get enough of their caprese sandwich. We even brought the leftovers back to the office for everyone to devour!) More importantly, we aimed to give our guests an opportunity to meet other like-minded, creative women.

As for the guestlist, we spent a solid amount of time putting together a list of women who felt authentic to Blowfish Malibu. Our end goal was to invite gals who understand the brand and who would bring a positive attitude on board. Plus we wanted to meet ladies we could see ourselves developing lasting relationships with. Ultimately, we were ecstatic by the girls who came and CANNOT wait for future collaborations with them. Each gal was incredible in their own unique way!

We loved seeing everyone get into the sailing experience! We couldn’t be happier about the new memories and friendships.

A massive shoutout to Matrimony Media for coming along to sail with us for the day and for documenting the event so beautifully. In all seriousness, we cannot get enough of these photos.

And if you were wondering what those epic goodie bags contained, let me tell you. Each individualized tote included a branded Malibu Spirit Jersey, a customized beach towel, sunscreen, and a pair of Blowfish Malibu Play in white.

We can’t wait for the next Blowfish Malibu event! If you are interested in attending our next bash, let us know! We would love to meet you.

Check out the photos below!

Discover Los Angeles: LA Dodgers Game

The Blowfish Malibu team heads to the ballpark for a Los Angeles Dodgers game!

We, at Blowfish Malibu, really consider ourselves lucky. There is a lot to be thankful for, but one thing in particular, is the fact that we enjoy spending time with each other. We love working together, but we also enjoy participating in local events as friends. This past month we packed up our cars and headed to Dodger Stadium for some Friday night fun.

Baseball is a true American sport, and if you’ve never been to a professional game, you are surely missing out. (But don’t worry, the season is long and you still have time to see one!) It is the fan’s excitement, the smell of the garlic fries, and of course, the delish Dodger (hot) dogs that has to be experienced in person.

The Dodgers games bring out a whole other side in yourself! You get to cheer at the top of your lungs (even if you have no idea what’s going on). Fans can sing “Take me out to the ball game” with thousands of other fans and not care one bit what your screechy voice sounds like. Strangers exchange  high fives and people toast one another.

Going to baseball games creates a certain kind of camaraderie and connectedness that everyone should experience.

If you are thinking about heading to the park, consider the Friday night games because there is a massive fireworks show! The stadium officials open the playing field after the last out and everyone is invited onto the grass to watch the grandiose show. It is a truly stunning way to end the game with your family, friends, and of course, co-workers.

We made a video of our experience at the Dodger game. Check it out below.

+ If you are interested in attending a game, find the LA Dodgers schedule here. Go Dodgers!
