Check It Out: Smorgasburg LA

Let’s face it, LA is a foodie’s paradise and Smorgasburg LA is no exception. This Los Angeles weekly food-fueled event celebrated its one-year anniversary last month and Blowfish Malibu was there to join in on the festivities. And of course we were happy to indulge in some treats!

Smorgasburg began all the way on the other side of the country, in Brooklyn, back in 2011. Since then, it has grown to be the largest weekly open-air food market in America. In June of 2016, Smorgasburg landed in Downtown Los Angeles’ ROW DTLA. The east coast’s version only runs from April through November, but because LA has amazing weather year-round, every Sunday you can choose from dozens of the best food vendors the city has to offer. Go ahead, treat yourself to their delectable confections.

You’ll have no problem finding something great to eat (and also make your Instagram friends jealous). LA staples like Donut Friend, Shrimp Daddy, and Amazebowls are regulars at Smorgasburg. A few of us Blowfish Malibu gals partook in some Latin yummies during our time there. I went with The Rican Food and chose to indulge in their mofongo with chicken. This plantain-based dish was packed with so much butter and garlic goodness that I almost went back for more! Erica went with a drool-worthy arepa from Sus Arepas that was stuffed with chicken salad and avocado. (Feeling hungry yet?)

While the main attraction is food, there are a few other vendors that offer goods of the non-edible variety. Well, unless you like to eat artisan soaps (you do you, girl). We definitely had some favorites: Coast-to-Coast Mobile Vintage and their amazing antique trailer were definitely a showstopper; Promised Land LA kept things shady (in a good way) with their cool eyewear and The Global Trunk, which specialized in handmade creations from indigenous artisans around the world, had one-of-a-kind pieces that had my wallet screaming, “take my money!”

Honestly, there are so many amazing foods and goods available at Smorgasburg LA that I could easily go broke every Sunday afternoon. The event keeps things friendly by offering free two-hour parking (yes, free parking in LA!). This unique and amazing weekly DTLA event gives us all the good feels that we can’t wait to go back. Maybe next time we’ll indulge in a pineapple boat from Shrimp Daddy! Or a maple glaze and coconut bacon donut from Donut Friend. Or a fresh prince of bowl air from Amazebowls. The options are endless!
